From littlethings.com: The song itself has a lot of history to it, originally written by Irving Berlin in 1918, it differs from other patriotic songs due to the fact that it takes the form of a prayer. Then, in 1938, he revised his song, and it was brought into the limelight when singer Kate Smith performed it. As Hitler was gaining more momentum in Europe, Smith provided a sobering introduction before she sung:
“While the storm clouds gather far across the sea / Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free / Let us all be grateful for a land so fair / As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.”
