Newt Gingrich is now rumored to be Choice #1 for the White House Chief of Staff position.
The former House Speaker was at the White House yesterday, claiming that he was ‘consulting’ President Trump on his selection of a Chief of Staff.
Gingrich would shake things up in the White House, no doubt about that. His history of getting things done in bipartisan fashion in Washington is legend. Combined with his institutional knowledge of Congress, how it works, and which buttons to push to make things happen, Newt could be the most effective White House Chief of Staff in history.
My greatest concern is that Newt and the president are too much alike. Both are geniuses. Both are risk takers, and both have huge egos, wherein lies the problem. Can Newt subordinate himself to anyone, even the President of the United States? He has been publicly, vocally critical of President Trump, which will have to stop. He will be required to be 100% behind his president, even if he finds himself in profound disagreement with him. Can Newt do that?

I’ve now heard from two different sources that @newtgingrich (who was at the White House today) is currently topping the list for the next @realDonaldTrump administration White House Chief of Staff.

Also, Newt has been publicly critical of President Trump on numerous occasions. He will have to drop his disagreements and support his boss's decisions 100% of the time, at least publicly. I'm not sure Newt can do that.

"The Camscam episode was but one example of how Gingrich mastered the medium of cable television early on; he understood that chaos plays better in front of the cameras than order," argues @julianzelizer https://t.co/6Et33lOwUz
