Photo, above: Marine Le Pen being presented with a headscarf she is required to wear to meet the grand mufti. Le Pen was speaking so rapidly I couldn’t translate her French, but it sounded a lot like “pound sand!”

Populist French candidate for President, Marine Le Pen, refused today to wear a headscarf  for a meeting with Lebanaon’s grand mufti, who required that Le Pen cover her head to meet with him. Instead, Le Pen promptly declined to wear the scarf, relayed her regards for the grand mufti, reboarded her plane, and flew back to France.

Le Pen, who is in Beirut in a bid to boost her presidential credentials, was set to meet the Sunni Muslim religious leader on Tuesday morning until the sudden change of heart.

“You can pass on my respects to the Grand Mufti, but I will not cover myself up,” Le Pen said.
